DIRECTX 9 IS REQUIRED
Install the DirectX 9 June 2010 End-User Runtime before you patch. The add-on (dinput8.dll) needs d3dx9_35.dll, which Windows 10 and 11 do not ship. Without it the add-on will not load.
THE LAUNCHER IS UNSIGNED
Windows SmartScreen shows “Windows protected your PC” the first time you run TheImperialCourier.exe. Choose More info, then Run anyway. We have no code-signing certificate yet, so this prompt is expected.
ANTIVIRUS FALSE POSITIVES
Some antivirus products flag unsigned launchers and any unsigned DLL that hooks a game process. Add an exclusion for the client folder, then press PATCH again to restore anything that was quarantined.
KEEP THE CUSTOM SKIN
The client warns that your XML files are not compatible. Ignore its advice to run /loadskin Default 1 — that discards the Hero tab, Armarium, Waypoint and pet windows.
KNOWN ART GAP
The Courier installs the item icons, NPC models and maps a stock RoF2 client lacks. In the Games arena the champions now show their own models; the Game Master inside the arena still looks like a plain human. Cosmetic only.
INSTALL — SIX STEPS
1Start from your own RoF2-era EverQuest client. The client itself is Daybreak’s and cannot be included — nothing here distributes it.
2Install the DirectX 9 June 2010 End-User Runtime from Microsoft. The Morituri add-on needs d3dx9_35.dll, which a stock Windows 10 or 11 does not have. Without it the add-on will not load.
3Download The Imperial Courier and put TheImperialCourier.exe in your client folder, next to eqgame.exe. Run it from there. The launcher is unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen shows “Windows protected your PC” the first time — choose More info, then Run anyway.
4Press SELECT CLIENT FOLDER and choose that same folder. The Courier checks for eqgame.exe and its Resources folder before saving.
5Close every running EverQuest client, then press PATCH — the Courier refuses to patch while one is open. It installs dinput8.dll, the Morituri UI, the server’s spell, skill and AA text files, and the classic zones, NPC models, item art and maps a stock RoF2 client lacks. The first patch downloads roughly 1.1 GB. It never modifies eqgame.exe, and it keeps these files current on every start.
6Press ENTER ARENA (PLAY). The Courier writes eqhost.txt and starts the client — you never edit that file yourself. Type any username and password: the account is created on first connect, there is nothing to register. Choose Claudius Maximus from the server list.
CLIENT CHECKLIST
Before your first login:
✓A working RoF2-era EverQuest client — it is not included with the Courier and is not distributed here. You supply your own.
✓The DirectX 9 June 2010 End-User Runtime is installed. A stock Windows 10 or 11 does not have d3dx9_35.dll, and the Morituri add-on will not load without it.
✓TheImperialCourier.exe sits in the client folder, next to eqgame.exe.
✓The launcher is unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC" the first time — choose More info, then Run anyway.
✓The Courier's client folder is that same folder, and it shows Verified.
✓Every running EverQuest client is closed — the Courier refuses to patch while one is open.
✓PATCH finished without errors — dinput8.dll is in place, and the server disconnects clients without it. The first patch downloads roughly 1 GB.
✓Antivirus has not quarantined dinput8.dll or the Courier (add an exclusion, then press PATCH again).
✓Started the game with ENTER ARENA (PLAY) and chose Claudius Maximus from the server list. Type any username and password: the account is created on first connect, there is nothing to register.
